What Epic Fantasy Would You Write?

Ever have the urge to write an epic fantasy, your own mythology of a hero and some great adventure? Well, here's a test to see just what kind of tale you would end up writing. Take a look! You might learn something...

Who is your hero?

A young student wizard.

A humble but good person from a quiet land.

A knight on a personal quest.

A cluster of siblings from a noble house.

A criminal haunted by his own guilt.

An orphan who figures in prophecy.

Lots of different heroes in different stories.

A reluctant heir to the throne.

Where does your story take place?

A long-forgotten era of the earth.

Across many worlds, including this one maybe.

A gritty Medeviel landscape.

A dreamworld where all our personal issues are made flesh.

An unseen (or unnoticed) part of this, the "real" world.

Far, far from here, upon a planet whose very nature is different from what we know.

A familiar place, but brimming with strange and exotic details.

A mystical world of magic and dragons.

What kinds of monsters does your hero encounter?

Demons of various kinds and shapes.

Living Dead.

Warped victims of malice and hunger.

Goblins, trolls, etc. plus a few exotic beasties.

Beings transformed by magic into something new.

The human kind.

The nature of magic itself.

Shadow creatures and their slaves.

What is at stake?

The sanctity of minds, souls and flesh.

Genocide.

Individual lives and happiness.

Identity.

The natural (and supernatural) order.

Defeating a terrible and immortal tyranny.

Whether reality itself will fall.

Life. All life.

Who is the wisest person in your story?

A very old, very wily wizard.

Some friend of the hero, probably with a secret past.

A comic relief character no one at first takes seriously.

The hero, eventually.

A servant of the powers of Light.

All are wise, but in different ways.

Matter of opinion, really.

The leader of the realm under attack.

What motivates most of your antagonists?

Greed in various forms.

Jealousy.

Selfishness and short-sightedness.

Power.

Loyalty to a predatory nature.

Ruthless ambition.

Deep hatred.

Bigotry.

How would you describe magic?

Akin to psychic ability.

No magic, only imagination.

The power of language.

Native powers of creation (in some beings).

Forces that hold reality together, akin to gravity or magnetism.

Reshaping reality for a very stiff price.

Tapping into forces like Life, Death, Order, Chaos.

Pretty much an art form, with a lot of specialized technique.

And how does your story end?

With a beginning.

As the hero dies or retires.

With the birth of a new age.

End?

Haven't made up my mind yet.

With a hard-won victory and the bittersweet taste of the aftermath.

An epilogue that explains what happened to everyone.

Each story is really just a chapter in a larger story.

What colors do you use?

Bright blue, foam-white, and different shades of wood.

Silver and black, but also grey and the green of a forest.

Crimson, black, rose-red and of course White.

All of them, really.

Viridian, azure, cobal, emerald, ochre and ebon.

Red and gold, silver and green.

Amber, silver, whites and browns.

Rust, mildew, purple and sable.

Which is a setting you simply must use?

Titanic old forests.

A seemingly endless desert.

Frozen wastelands.

One huge swamp infested with a hungry evil.

A wonder-filled castle.

Ruins still pregnant with sleeping power.

Towers cluttered with the debris of countless generations--clothes, books, sculpture, furniture, etc.

Upon the deck of a small ship, travelling the waves.

Why, in the end, does your hero save the day?

Because of a terrible lesson learned.

Because he is good and sees no other choice.

Because he has willed it so.

What makes you think the day will necessarily be saved?

Because he realizes if he does not, he defiles himself.

Because of loyalty and decency, and out of revenge.

Because when at the heart of things, they care.

Because that is how he discovers who he truly is.

Which of the following feels the most "right" for your tale?

At attic where a lonely girl lives a secret life.

An arranged marriage.

Crystal balls.

A race of fascinating Giants.

Incest.

Vampires.

Love at first sight.

Dolphins.
