multiplayer, supposedly it's great strength, paled in comparison to the likes of UT or even time splitters.
It wasn't even remotely original in any way shape or form.
It's physics and ragdolling were also nothing new.
O.K. the graphics were impressive, but they were incredibly samey throughout the game and shinys only go so far for someone without ADD.

Halo was a complete triumph of hype over taste. Nothing more. Period.

The video gaming equivalent of half the people on this forum, you know, saying very little but doing is oh so prettily

This sounds like the truimph of hype to push someone away.

I think Halo might not have done anything new persay, but everything it did it did the best of that generation of games. It's multiplayer was leaps and bounds above UT and TimeSplitters. TS3 is a great great game, but it's multiplayer is the most generic crap I can think of.

Ahahahahahahahahahahahah.

I love it.

However, the end level of Halo will always have a special place in my heart. Driving for three kilometers through the bowels of a ship that's exploding around you while three different factions duke it out has always been a great thing.

Grunts with fuel rod cannons suck.

just tire + grunt's face
I too enjoy that level very much.
Sid Halo multiplayer is amazingly entertaining, and you're comparing it to timesplitters? I'm sure a 100,000 people fire up a console everyday to play timesplitters. Right.

Furthermore FUCK JACKALS. That is all.

My favorite thing: the one-shot Hunter kill and being able to pull it off consistantly.

Tell me how!

Seriously. I have to know.

Also, Meri: The reason you keep looking at the sky might be because your controller is inverted. That makes it mighty fucking difficult to look at anything right if you don't play a million flight-simulation games already.

I had that problem too until I switched my player to the regular method of looking. MUCH easier. It might help.

You need:
1. A Hunter
2. A pistol (Halo 1) or a sniper rifle (Halo 1 & 2)
3. A bit of room to move around.

On a hunter's back is a big orange patch, like the ones in their arms and leg joints. During a fight with one, if you can strafe around behind it, it will occasionally straighten out enough to expose this patch. Just zoom in on this patch with the pistol or sniper rifle and pop 'em one. If you did it right, they'll die instantly.

It's easiest to hit them when they're just about to lunge attack you, or if you're behind them and yet to be spotted.

You can do it with a shotgun as well, but you have to get right on their rear.

what really sucks is when you get locked in a room with hunters and you run out of ammo. This has happened to me. It's really hard to kill the fuckers with grenades and weapon butts.

I actually make it a point to kill hunters with melee as often as possible. It really annoys the fuck out of people when I'm doing co-op, although not as much as my insistance on riding on top of the tank's turret.

Actually, riding on top of the tank is a very valid mode of transportation if you don't have anything else in co-op. I've done it many a time with Pike.

Dammit, I don't need to know about you riding Pike's turret. That just completely eradicates my desire to be jettisoned.

I'm not terribly experienced with Halo, hence my ignorance on Hunter-killing techniques. I fuckin love the game, but my boyfriend is insanely good at it and I am not. So it gets really frustrating to play deathmatch when it's just me and him (and since we don't have friends, it usually is) and get killed five seconds after I friggin spawn. My average lifespan when I play against him is about thirty seconds. His has gotten as high as five minutes. Not a fair fight.

I've tried playing through the missions to remedy this, but I just get my ass kicked there as well. He's just WAY too good. And he screenwatches like a bitchy little motherfucker.

Screen watching + him knowing every nook and cranny of every fucking level = me punching him in the arm approximately every thirty seconds.

Anyway. Cool. I'm totally gonna waste all day tomorrow in front of the tube.

Again with the twisting of my words!

EDIT: Also, what's wrong with swinging both ways?

And Halo wasn't? It's a FPS multiplayer, generic comes as standard. It's almost the point.

Come off it, No bots, very limited weapons, limited maps (although this is also an issue with TS, but not UT). I'll give you that it has vehicles and they haven't really been done anywhere else as well on the console but that can really only go so far. what is it that is so specifically good about halo's multiplayer that none of it's contemporaries had? Other than looking good.

it was nothing more than just another first person multiplayer. The only thing it did better was looking good.

I don't deny it's popular. But then so is big brother. It's like smoking, the number of people that do it has nothing to do with how good it is, but the number of people already claiming it's God's gift.

To the moon Sid, to the moon. A vehicle in halo is one of the most useful tools a spartan could use, especially in multiplayer.

that is all.

You might find this interesting. There's a bit about Ringworld in the intro.

Yet you fail to quantify that with anything other than "lots of people like it"

I maintain the vast majority of people are idiots that will be suckered by any hype that is thrown their way. This is why the mainstream is full of quality less pap. defend it on it's own terms, not it's fan base.

"Fun" as it is subjective doesn't count. Personally I thought it was about the least fun Xbox game I have played. And I've played a few.

so you're saying you suck at it?

Fun is of course a factor you nitwit. If games weren't fun or entertaining why would we play them? Yes lots of stuipid people play it, but lots of stupid people play unreal and cs and pretty much any other game. The game is award winning Sid, just drop it already and return to your SD prison.

No fun isn't a factor on how good quality it is.

what a person subjectively likes determines their level of taste. A person of good taste doesn’t necessarily like what everyone else does, in fact they generally like the opposite (before anyone nitpicks, coincidence, not causality).

A person of good taste likes things of good quality, which is determined by factors less subjective than mere enjoyment potential, as that varies from person to person but quality is absolute.

Thus a "good game" and a "popular game" are not necessarily the same thing, no matter the amount of enjoyment the masses derive from it.

to show that Halo is a good game you are going to display something other than the levels of enjoyment that a number of people derive from it.

Essentially, what makes it so fun?

P.S. SD is do great and so important because it's principles can (and arguably should) be applied to any discussion worth having. Without what SD is, beyond the subject matter, all conversations are bullshit and nonsense. You stupid, ignorant, juvenile child.

It's fun because it's of such high quality. The makers of Halo took the FPS concept and made a really solid, well done, engaging game that surprised a lot of people with somewhat of a new premise and a good plot line.

That said, it's also fun because you can get in a jeep and run people the fuck over.
