I spent the weekend in the Mojave desert on a geologic field trip. Pictures will follow soon as I get them emailed to me.

Tip, if you're going to go to the desert, bring a tent. Tarantulas like to come out at night and crawl over everything and everyone.

And ear plugs, because there's always the up till 4am party crew that think the tent blocks their loud talking and laughing.

This formation was a pyroclaustic blast 18.5MYA. Yes, the volcano distributed debris that tall. Note, it was probably taller, but got compressed over the centuries.

This is Amboy Crater. It's a young volcano (100K years). The lava stretches for as far as the eye can see. It was 100 degrees on that black rock.
Image

This is a syncline, a result of the Barstow fault. Note, the red area is Tuff, a volcanic layer, not unlike what the lava field might become at Amboy Crater.

This is Kelso Dunes and I think that's the Granite Mountains in the background. Those dunes are 700' and a bitch to climb up on.

Or a regular photos thread. Or a generic "photos of your vacations thread" I don't think this is really Live Journal though. He isnt all "whaa my girlfriend doesn[I AM TOO STUPID TO USE AN APOSTROPHE]t love me so I went to kill myself in the desert and took and posted some pictures first waaaaa"

It would have been good if that happened though.

These pictures are boring.

A photo thread in the photo forum is livejournal?

Sounds like some shark jumping, there.

You're livejournal.

Nice pics. Reminds me of some of the stuff I saw this weekend on my way to Farmington.

Actually, I'd be Geojournal.

Those pics are ones I found on the internet. I'm still waiting to get emailed the pics of our trip, since I forgot my camera.

I updated them with an explanation of them.

This is Hole in the Wall. I'm in front in a gray shirt, blue jeans, hat and blue backpack. This was formed by a violent eruption that covered the area as deep as the bluff. The holes are from rocks that have eroded out and sand has made them bigger over time.
Image

I'm in the background. This is pictoglyphs at Hole in the Wall.

The pictoglyphs.

Me walking at Rainbow Basin. Check out my calves. (blue shirt, shorts)

Kelso Dunes. Im not in the pic. I'm too far ahead and was one of the few that made it to the top of the tallest dune.
Image

Even I had the sense not to climb up that. Oh, check out the go-go dancer's butt at the top. All the old guys, included the professor was checking that out. Sure, she's "Hot", but she stays up until 4:30 every night drinking.
Image

Here's an awkward pic of me. See the blonde to my left? As soon as they found out the guy she was with was just a "Friend" all the Mexicans, included the guy to her left, hit on her the rest of the time.
