Original Book Forum Guidelines are here. All of those guidelines still apply. Updates for ease of use after merging are as follows.

Hello. You may have noticed that there has recently been a bit of a revamp, with several forums being condensed. In this forum, you'll find everything that was once in the Arts & Entertainment forum (which this still is) as well as the topics from the Book forum. As books fall generally into the category of Arts and Entertainment, this makes sense and is harmonious and you will all enjoy it.

In the interest of organization, and to preserve some of the restrictions which were originally placed upon the Book forum, please accept these guidelines as things you'll do.

1) When starting a new book thread, please use the following format.

Book: Book Title - Author.

For example, if you wanted to discuss The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath, the title of the thread should be:

Book: The Bell Jar - Sylvia Plath

The result is that things are more easily distinguishable as discussions of books, are easily differentiated from adaptations of those books (so, for example, it's easy to distinguish between a discussion of Chuck Palahniuk's novel Fight Club and the movie of the same name with Meat Loaf), and it's easier to get people to discuss books with you than if you picked, say, your favorite line from the book and expected us all to figure out what on earth you were talking about.

We'll try to keep an eye out for that, but it's really just a lot easier if you all just sort of do that.

2) As regards books, and in keeping with the book forum's original guidelines: "Don't get annoyed if people reveal plot points, or spoil the ending."

If you've not read a book and are nervous about things getting spoiled for you, you shouldn't be shocked when people are talking about the plot in a thread that says right there in the well-formed title that it's a book discussion. If you feel like you need to conceal spoilers (for example, if you don't want to give away the fact that a main character in a relatively new book is killed by a toaster), the easiest way is probably to type your spoiler, then change the color to white, then put it in a quote box. That way, people who want to read it can just highlight the quote box.

Obviously, this only works for blocks of text. But yeah, don't come crying to moderators if someone's spoiled something for you. Read at your own risk.

3) If you'd like to start a book club thread, PM one of the moderators of the A&E forum.

We've tried to do it in the past (to my knowledge, only with Catch 22 and Goedel, Escher, Bach - an Eternal Golden Braid, but they're fun and interactive and we can all sit around and do whatever the hell it is book clubs do. We'll work with you to format a schedule and make the topic a "sticky" topic (that is, it'll always appear at the top of the thread list) for the duration of the book club reading span.

That's poorly worded. You know what I mean.

4) If you have any questions about any of the above, or if you've got suggestions, please PM a moderator.

Or start a thread about it. Do something. Myself, Scott, Der_Kommissar and arailt are usually around. Try us first.
